With cold winter weather upon us, it is an important time to ensure you are keeping your feet warm and dry. Here are a few tips to keep your feet healthy in the winter ⬇️

🧦 Wear clean, dry socks every day🔹While fuzzy socks will keep your feet warm, moisture from sweat can lead to bacteria so it is important to always have clean socks. It is ideal to wear socks made of moisture-wicking material, like merino wool, as moisture can make the feet even colder.

👟 Wear proper fitting footwear🔹Wear boots that fit comfortably and that aren’t too tight. Tight footwear can decrease blood flow, making it harder to keep your feet warm. Boots should have a solid base, supportive heel, and laces or straps to ensure that you’re able to remain stable on wet and slippery surfaces. It is also important to inspect the tread on the boot. You want to make sure it has good traction and will hold well on snow and ice.

🔥 Dry your footwear🔹After spending time outside, ensure they are dry before going out in them again. Damp shoes can cause the feet to feel cold more quickly and increase the risk of bacteria growth.

🧼 Wash & moisturize your feet daily🔹Cleaning your feet helps to prevent bacteria/infections from affecting you. Make sure that your feet are completely dry before you put socks on. Cold weather means less moisture for your skin and nails. When your skin dries out, it splits and can lead to painful fissures, increased pain and chances of infection. Skin problems can be particularly troublesome for people with diabetes or those with impaired circulation. Remember to use a good moisturizer daily. If possible, apply moisturizer shortly after a bath or shower.
