Walking on fresh snow is one of my favourite things about winter. However, walking in the winter can come with some risks. Things we all need to be aware of is ice, uneven terrain, and cold feet! So what are some things we look for in a winter boot?

Height – ideally picking a boot that comes up over the ankle. This will help keep your foot and ankle more stable and protect you if you step into some deep snow!

Stiffness – a thick, stiff sole on the bottom provides sturdiness and support and protects the feet from ice. If the sole has  extra grip, even better for icy terrain.

Warmth – having an insulated, waterproof boot will help keep your feet feeling nice and toasty. Wearing the proper size is also important for warmth, if the boot is too small your feet will actually get colder more quickly!

Removable insole – if you plan to put your orthotics in your boots, make sure it has a removable piece inside to ensure there is enough space for your orthotics. If you are having trouble, bring your boots and orthotics in for an adjustment

It is important to ensure you are wearing the right sized boot. Bring your orthotics and the warm socks you will be wearing with you shopping to ensure you have a finger’s width at the end of the boot. Try wearing the boots on a few small walks to break them in and to ensure they aren’t creating pain or blisters.

Some of our favourite brands for hiking boots include: Sorel, Keen, Merrell, Salomon, and Columbia. Happy walking!
